The Comfort of Others

The Comfort of Others by Kay Langdale follows Minnie and her sister Clara, two elderly spinsters living quietly in their crumbling country house, now surrounded by a housing estate built after their father sold off the family land. In their seventies, they live by habit and silence, especially around the painful secret buried since Minnie was sixteen. Across the street, 11-year-old Max escapes his troubled home life by watching Minnie’s steady routines from his window. Over one summer, Minnie writes in her diary while Max records his thoughts on a Dictaphone, and the two stories slowly weave together as old ghosts surface, hidden truths emerge, and unlikely comfort grows between them in a tale that’s both dark and gently uplifting.
